Global and China IC Manufacturing Industry Report, 2011-2012

This is new market research report”Global and China IC Manufacturing Industry Report, 2011-2012″ added by ReportsnReports to its Database. The IC manufacturing industry mainly involves memory vendors, IDMs and foundries. By technology, IC can be divided into analog, digital and mixed signal. Most digital IC businesses are IC design houses and, analog signal businesses commonly refer to IDMs. But it is not the case for Japanese manufacturers, which have long been applying vertical supply chain system and bringing the whole link of the supply chain under control. Thus, nearly all the semiconductor manufacturers in Japan are IDMs.

The foundries fall into two types, one produces high-volume digital IC and the other produces low-volume analog IC, high-voltage IC and mixed signal IC. For high-volume digital IC foundries, they are required to ceaselessly improve the IC process technology by CAPEX at least USD1 billion annually, more than 50% of which are earmarked for equipment depreciation and R&D; for the later, they are much smaller by operation scale, with each annual revenue no more than 700 million USD.

For digital IC foundries, efficiency is the top priority, since only those that can develop the most advanced process technology in the shortest duration can come out top in the cut-throat competition. For instance, the R&D cost is likely to recover within one year provided a company makes the initiative to develop the world’s first 90-nm process technology within six months at a cost of USD1 billion. However, if a company develops the same technology by investing the same amount two years later than the pioneer, it means that there is little chance for it to recover its R&D cost, for the less advanced technology is no longer a magnet for customers. Therefore, there is, in general, only one lucrative in digital IC foundries, and one with meager profit, while the rest are either loss-making or with a narrow margin of profit.

TSMC is the biggest player among wafer foundries worldwide, with the market occupancy approximating 48% and its profit making up roughly 85% in the whole industry. The market capitalization of TSMC is as high as USD68 billion, as opposed to the NO.4 SMIC whose market cap is less than USD1.5 billion

TSMC, UMC and SMIC are among digital IC foundries, while VIS, TowerJazz, Dongbu HiTek and ASMC are among analog IC, high-voltage IC and mixed-signal foundries. For UMC, its considerable profit is yielded from the investment in a series of well performing IC design houses, such as Mediatek, Novatek and Sunplus, all of which are loyal customers of UMC. Analog foundries have suffered hefty loss for many years, which largely attributed that all its customers are small analog IC designers that are very sensitive to economic climate.

Among foundries in Chinese Mainland, SMIC enjoys absolute dominance. It is the only that has 12-inch wafer fab, comparing to HHNEC and Grace Semiconductor, which were merged by SMIC in late 2011, that only have three 8-inch wafer fabs. Both state-run enterprises, HHNEC and Grace Semiconductor monopolize government-related IC business, which makes them possible to reap lucrative profit. However, both feature laggard of technologies and are hard to face real tough competition. Another case is Shanghai Huali Microelectronics, the investment of which amounts to RMB14.5 billion, by and large backed by the government. In terms of competitiveness, all these businesses far lag behind SMIC

Although Samsung embarked on wafer foundry business as early in 2007, no remarkable achievements have been made over the past five years. In 2007, Samsung’s revenue from foundry business reported USD370 million, and the figure in 2011 rose to USD470 million excluding that brought by Apple, the sole big customer of Samsung. Being involved in intellectual property issue, Apple is forced to commission Samsung as its OEM. For Samsung, it sets foot in wafer foundry business with the aim of transferring the excessive capacity. Unlike Samsung, Intel has no intention at all to develop wafer foundry business.

It is worth mentioning that, Taiwan-based DRAMs have been struggling to make the tough choice of transformation or closedown after suffering heavy losses for many years. For instance, Powerchip has shifted its business to foundry. In Q4 2011, 60% revenue of Powerchip was from foundry business. In 2011, Powerchip’s revenue from foundry business hit USD431 million, against USD149 million in 2010, marking the fastest developed foundry

China Aquaculture Industry Report, 2011-2012

China’s output of acqutic products in 2011 amounted to 56.1 million tons, a YoY rise of 4.4%; at the same time, the disparity between seawater and freshwater products in production ratio was narrowing year by year, accounting for 51.9% and 48.1% repespectively in 2011.

Following the increased demand of overseas market, the export volume of China’s aquatic products also rose to 3.912 million tons in 2011, accompanied by export value of US$17.79 billion, and presenting a year-on-year rise of 17.1% and 28.7%, respectively. Brand-name, high-quality bred aquatic products like prawn, shellfish, tilapia, eel, large yellow croaker, crayfish, etc. are still the main export varieties, with total export value in 2011 sharing 49.74% of the total export of aquatic products over the corresponding period. Shandong, Fujian and other coastal provinces serve as major exporting provinces for China’s aquatic products, in 2011 export volume of Shandong and Fujian accounted for 48.8% of the total. Japan, the United States, Europe and South Korea are still deemed as the most important export destinations of China’s aquatic products, to which the aquatic exports made up 86.3% of China’s total export of aquatic products in 2011.

China aquatic product processing industry, driven by the expanding aquaculture scale as well as the growing demand from downstream sectors, has witnessed substantial growth, with operating revenue climbing 25.95% YoY to RMB360.1 billion in 2011. Influenced by consumers’ eating habits, frozen aquatic product market size has been expanding. In 2011, the frozen aquatic processing industry achieved the revenue of RMB275.9 billion, holding 76.6% of the entire aquatic product processing industry. As costs of frozen storage, transportation, procurement, etc. climb quickly, during 2006-2012, the gross margin of frozen aquatic processing industry has been at a low level between 11%-15%.

China Aquaculture Industry Report, 2011-2012 not only focuses on the operating environment, market supply & demand, market segments, import-export trade, etc. of Chinese aquaculture industry, but also conducts a detailed analysis on aquatic products’ price trends, key breeding areas, and 13 aquaculture companies.

Dalian Yiqiao Marine Seeds Co., Ltd, a leader in marine seedling cultivation in China, is primarily involved in the cultivation and marketing of sea cucumber and shrimp spat, with 2011 consolidated gross margin as high as 64.13%, towering over levels of other counterparts. It has a total of 143,000 cubic meters of rearing water bodies, including an addition of 57,000 cubic meters in 2011. The Company has its market mainly in Liaoning province, from which its revenue in 2011 swept 96.6% of the company’s total revenue, but featuring a high risk for single regional management.

Homey Group and Zhangzidao Fishery Group, which are specialized in aquaculture, also enjoy relatively high consolidated gross margins, up to 22.7% and 34.1% separately in 2011. Development strategy of Homey Group is still focused on the development of sea cucumber breeding business, with catches up to 2,282.7 tons in 2011, a YoY rise of 68.59%, and sea cucumber product revenue reaching RMB420 million, sharing 48.1% of operating revenue over the same period. Moreover, in 2011, Homey also invested RMB1.09 billion to extend sea cucumber industry chain, i.e., the new 76,000-square-meter sea cucumber seedling workshop for realizing self-sufficiency in offspring seed, the new 9,800-mu (1 mu = 1/15 hectare) sea cucumber farming project to raise production, as well as the 10,000-mu artificial reef project exploitation for carrying out sea cucumber sowing breeding at deep-sea bottom.

In 2011, Zhangzidao Fishery Group achieved operating revenue of RMB2.94 billion, of which the aquaculture business occupied 44.9%, with gross margin of 57.89%. In order to further improve its competitiveness, the company is now working towards the integration of breeding, transportation and processing. In the same year, it lavished RMB1 billion for the construction of sea cucumber & abalone breeding base in South Korea; RMB170 million for building 9.7 kt/a Yongxiang Shellfish Processing Center; RMB88.75 million for launching the frozen logistics project with Japan’s Chuo Gyorui and Hohsui.

There are relatively low gross margins for feed, fishing and processing enterprises, e.g., the consolidated gross margin of Guangdong Haid Group, dedicated to the aquaculture feed, was merely 9.6% in 2011. However, the capacity of Guangdong Haid Group ever grows thanks to the brisk downstream demand; in 2011, Haid acquired an 80% stake in Vietnam Pan Asia, since then into the Vietnamese aquaculture feed market.

Global and China GaAs-based Device Industry Report, 2011-2012

Distinct from traditional silicon semiconductor, gallium arsenide (GaAs) is a compound of the elements gallium and arsenic. It is an III-V semiconductor and is mainly used in handset RF front end like power amplifier (PA). In the 4G era, handset RF front end becomes more sophisticated. The RF front end of 4G devices costs around USD9-11, twice of that of 3G system and 6 times of that of 2G system. The handset RF system mainly consists of transceiver, PA, filter and antenna switch. The market size of handset RF approximated USD3.8 billion and is expected to hit USD5 billion in 2016.

Taking 4G iPad for example, it applies as many as 19 RF front-end components, including 7 PAs, 1 transceiver and 2 antenna switch modules (ASM). Of those devices, 3 PAs are provided by AVAGO and correspond to three LTE frequency bands; 2 PAs are supplied by Skyworks and correspond to two 3G frequency bands; 1 PA is offered by TriQuint, which contains three separate PA dies and corresponds to four 2G frequency bands; the rest 1 PA is in the ASM supplied by Japan-based Murata; the two ASMs are provided by Murata. Additionally, 4G iPad is integrated with 802.11/Bluetooth/FM supported by Broadcom BCM4330, and its SIP IC contains GaAs pHEMT PA provided by Skyworks.

Murata is the largest MLCC manufacturer, the largest communication module (including Bluetooth module and WLAN module) producer, the second largest SAW filter manufacturer and the largest antenna switch producer in the world. On March 1, 2012, Murata completed the acquisition on PA Division of Renesas and marched into PA market, which empowers the company to possess the most complete product line in the handset RF market.

Win Semiconductor is the largest GaAs foundry with AVAGO as its main customer. AWSC’s major client is Skyworks that has its own GaAs fab and outsources its production in the case of insufficient capacity. Anadigics is the smallest GaAs IDM and its revenue fell by 29% in 2011.

RFMD, once the world’s largest PA manufacturer, relies heavily on big customers. In FY2008, Nokia contributed to 59% of RFMD’s revenue, and Motorola 14%. In the era of 3G and smart phone, Nokia’s business drops sharply, so RFMD shows slow transition and sees declining performance, with revenue slipping 17% or so in 2011.

Skyworks is in its heyday. It is supported by its main customers, the global top 10 mobile phone vendors, and boasts the most reasonable customer distribution and first-class technology. AVAGO is a rising star and provides services for 3G and 4G devices. Its acquisition of Infineon’s BAW Division in 2008 makes AVAGO market share in BAW filter area register as high as 65%, and BAW filter enjoys the highest price among the handset RF front end components. AVAGO and Skyworks may rival each other in the coming years.

SEDI is a subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric Industries which acts as a manufacturer possessing the complete industry chain ranging from the upstream substrate to the downstream IC. The products of SEDI target at the PA of base station.

RDA, a Chinese mainland manufacturer, booms by virtue of unbranded phone fabrication, with revenue growing 51.3% in 2011. The company ranks No. 1 in the market of unbranded cell phone PA, Bluetooth, FM turner and DVB-S tuner, and occupies more than 50% of FM turner and DVB-S tuner market share.

Global and China Consumer Electronics Casing and Structural Parts Industry Report, 2011-2012

ReportsnReports add new market research Report”Global and China Consumer Electronics Casing and Structural Parts Industry Report, 2011-2012″ to its database. In the 3G era, mobile phones are highly homogenized. A mobile phone increasingly functions as a PC. The CPU of mobile phone, particularly of smart phone is monopolized by Qualcomm. There are two competitors, INTEL and AMD, in the PC CPU market. But Qualcomm enjoys monopolistic superiority in mobile phone CPU market in the 4G era. Now it’s difficult for mobile phone to be differentiated just with the conventional software and hardware. Therefore, the difference can be shown by display screen and casing.
Mobile phone manufacturers attach high importance to casing. Take Samsung for example, it is scheduled to launch mobile phones with ceramic case. Another case is Apple, which is set to unveil mobile phones with liquid metal case. Although these new technologies have yet been full-blown and there is little chance for commercialization within three to five years, the move indicates that mobile phone manufacturers have shifted their concerns from software and hardware to display screen and casing.
The three new mobile phone casing technologies have attracted attention: the first refers to NCVM (Non Conductive Vacuum Metallization); the second Insert Molding, and the third Unibody. However, a cleaning room and continuous magnetron sputtering equipment are required in the application of NCVM, which cause the high cost, and long term manufacturing engineering to be explored. In this sense, such a super giant like Foxconn would prefer to partner with Ways Technical in NCVM application.
Insert Molding technology stems from Galaxy SII developed by Samsung. The technology combines the virtues of plastic case and metal structure. Plastic case features low cost, while the metal structure can enhance the overall intensity of the mobile phone. Since the smart phone has very big screen (some are even 5 inches), the technology is a compromise that remedies the defeats of plastic case (poor intensity) and metal case (high cost).
Unibody is derived from iPad. At present, only HTC mobile phone is equipped with this technology featuring the highest cost. There are only two manufacturers, Taiwan-based Catcher and Foxconn Tech, can massively supply mobile phone case with Unibody technology. Considering the possible inadequate capacity of mobile phone case with Unibody technology, Apple gave up its plan to employ the design. However, Catcher increased 3,000 units of CNC to improve the capacity in 2012. And it is estimated that the new-generation iPhone will employ the Unibody technology.

In laptop and tablet PC, Apple made a success as a pioneer to apply Unibody technology. Foxconn Tech is the major iPad casing provider for Apple. And the case of Apple MacBook Air is equipped with the laptop case with the highest cost of over USD100, equivalent to 5-7 times of ordinary laptop case. Catcher is the major case provider for MacBook Air. Although Catcher suffered short-term business suspension due to the air pollution incident in Suzhou, the company quickly transferred its capacity from Suzhou to Suqian to avoid loss on business performance.
It is unlikely for Ultrabook to employ expensive case as Apple does. But for light and thin features, metal case is a must. Thus, Ultrabook employs stamping technology in cover, and the rest part is made of plastics. There are a few manufacturers utilizing glass fiber which can be only used in bottom. The price of ultrabook is much more than the mainstream price of laptop. Consequently, Ultrabook is doomed to be confined within high-end market, with the market share no more than 15%.
Tablet PC faces cut-throat competition in price. All the manufactures except Apple are trying every means to cut down the cost. And most manufacturers adopt traditional plastic case plus glass front cover. But unfortunately, the sales volume is not high.

Chinese Marine Diesel Engine Market Report 2011

The marine diesel engine is crowned as the “heart” that provides power for the vessel, falling into low-speed, middle-speed and high-speed marine diesel engines. Presently, the world’s two prominent marine diesel engine brands are MAN and Wartsila, of which the former is regarded as the low-speed marine diesel engineer tycoon, while the latter is the middle-speed titan.

The new vessel orders worldwide witnessed steep drop in 2011, causing the bleak demand for marine diesel engine. The order book of MAN Diesel & Turbo saw a year-on-year increase of 6.2%, but the figure was far behind that of 18.6% in 2010; by contrast, the order value of Wartsila Ship Power decreased by 7.7% year-on-year.

In order to enhance competitive edge and consolidate the market dominance, international marine diesel engine giants in 2011 accelerated their expansion in the Chinese market. In May, the phase-Ⅱ project of MAN Diesel & Turbo started business in Changzhou; in June, Wartsila and Jiangsu Cuixing Ocean Engineering established a joint venture which was specialized in the production of W26, W32 four-stroke middle-speed engine; in November, Caterpillar teamed up with Anqing CSSC Marine Diesel Co., Ltd. to set up a joint venture which was also the world’s only joint venture of Caterpillar in middle-speed marine diesel engine sector.

In China, the production of all low-speed diesel engines should be accredited by foreign tycoons such as MAN and Wartsila (occupying over 95%). In particular, one third of middle-speed diesel engines are licensed by MAN and Wartsila, being mainly applied as generating units of ocean vessels. And the rest are applied for the R&D and production of offshore and inland vessels. In 2011, CSSC Guangzhou Marine Diesel Co., Ltd. separately signed marine diesel engine technology import agreements with MAN and Wartsila. Taken together, MAN had 16 China-based technology authorized dealers, while Wartsila had 9 ones.

Chinese marine diesel engine enterprises made remarkable progress in many aspects such as capacity, product structure and independent R&D through import.

In 2010, the low-speed marine diesel engine capacity of China hit 12 million horsepower, while the output realized 4.306 million horsepower, rising 39.4% over 2007.And the middle-speed marine diesel engine output registered 8.245 million horsepower, an increase of 73.1% over 2007.

In 2011, the production of marine diesel engine in China witnessed remarkable progress over 2010, with the output of Dalian Marine Diesel Co., Ltd., Yichang Marine Diesel Engine Co., Ltd., Zhenjiang CME Co., Ltd. reaching 101 units (1.63 million horsepower), 101 units (1.04 horsepower) and 713 units (including 14 units of low-speed engines). By contrast, both the output of Hefei RongAn Power Machinery Co., Ltd. and Jiangsu Antai Power Machinery Co., Ltd. doubled year-on-year to 40 units.

Global and China Epoxy Resin Industry Chain Report, 2011-2012

In 2011, the global epoxy resin output approximated 2.24 million tons (80%-95% of which were Bisphenol A Epoxy Resin) and was mainly distributed in Asia, Western Europe and the United States where their output totally made up over 90% of the global total. Among these origins, China is the world’s largest producer and delivers about 37.1% of the global total output. As the European and American markets grow saturated, the increase of epoxy resin production is principally contributed by Asian countries especially China. In 2005-2011, the CAGR of epoxy resin output in China hit 10.8%, while that in Euro-American regions was only 3% or so.

Chinese epoxy resin manufacturers started late and few of them possess absolute scale advantages, featuring lower industry concentration degree than Euro-American nations. In 2011, the top 10 epoxy resin producers in Mainland China accounted for 60% of the national total capacity, while the capacity of the world’s top 6 epoxy resin manufacturers made up 61.8% of the global total. In this year, the top 3 epoxy resin manufacturers by capacity in Mainland China included Nan Ya Epoxy Resin (Kunshan) Co., Ltd., Sanmu Group and Kingboard Chemical Holdings Ltd.

Nan Ya Epoxy Resin (Kunshan) Co., Ltd. is the epoxy resin production base of Taiwan-based Nan Ya Plastics Corporation. As the Phase-II boasting annual capacity of 186.3 kt epoxy resins was put into production, the company’s epoxy resin capacity amounted to 316 kt/a in 2011, occupying 17.6% of the total capacity in Chinese Mainland, and Nan Ya Plastic Corporation thus becomes the world’s largest producer of epoxy resin and enjoys capacity of 480 kt/a. Sanmu Group ranked No. 5 in the world in 2011 by virtue of 200 kt/a epoxy resin and now has a 70 kt/a epoxy resin project under construction which will be put into operation in 2012.

Most epoxy resins are produced from a reaction between epichlorohydrin and bisphenol-A which boasted output of 450,000 tons and 400,000 tons respectively in Mainland China in 2011, with self-sufficiency rates of 99.1% and 41.0% separately.

The epichlorohydrin market in Chinese Mainland is dominated by domestic manufacturers. In 2011, the top 3 companies by capacity were Shandong Haili Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., Shandong Wudi Xinyue Chemical Co., Ltd. and Tianjin Botian Chemical Co., Ltd., of which Shandong Haili Chemical Industry maintained No. 1 in Asia and No. 2 in the world for its epichlorohydrin capacity.

The market demand for bisphenol A is largely dependent on imports. In 2011, the top 3 bisphenol A manufacturers by capacity in Mainland China included Bayer (Shanghai) Polymer Co., Ltd., Sinopec Mitsubishi Chemical Polycarbonate (Beijing) Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Chemicals Co., Ltd.
